At What Age Should My Child Get Braces?
Children are unique in every way, including when it comes to their teeth. Each child’s dental journey is different, from when they get their first baby tooth, to when they need braces.
Signs Your Child Might Need Braces
Orthodontists can fix a lot more than just crooked or gapped teeth; they also evaluate a patient’s airway, bite, and oral habits. Braces can be beneficial for your child if they experience or have experienced any of the following:
Thumb or finger-sucking
Extended pacifier use
Jaws that shift, stick out, or make sounds
Frequent accidental cheek biting
Mouth breathing
Early or late loss of baby teeth
Abnormal bite
Grinding or clenching teeth
Trouble chewing or biting
Facial imbalance or asymmetry
Teeth that stick out
Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth
Difficulty speaking
When to take your child to the Orthodontist
Your child should have their first orthodontist visit by age 7. At this first appointment, the orthodontist will examine their bite and airway and then ask questions to learn about their oral habits. Your orthodontist will consider your child’s dental history, his or her family history, dental habits, and the current state of their teeth to determine if, and when, they will need braces. The most common period for children to have braces is between the ages of 9 to 14 years old.
