Can Braces Rust?

Can Braces Rust?

If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you probably have a lot of questions, like can braces rust in your mouth? After all, they are made of metal and metal gets rusty over time when in contact with water, right? Actually, this is a myth. Braces cannot rust in your mouth.

Why Braces Do Not Rust

Before a company is allowed to distribute a product to the public, it must complete testing and clinical trials, meet regulations, obtain FDA approval, and much more. Orthodontic devices that a certified orthodontist offers have undergone all this testing and have been deemed safe. Braces are made of stainless steel, titanium, or other non-corrosive metals.

What looks like rust could just be a stain or something stuck in your braces. If it looks like your braces have rust, try brushing and flossing your teeth and see if it goes away. You could also ask a friend or family member if they think it is rust.

What if my braces really are rusting?

If your braces really are rusting, then your orthodontist may have committed malpractice and may have used something other than an orthodontic brace on your teeth. If this happens, you may be able to sue them. Talk with an attorney, and do not go back to your original orthodontist. Find a new orthodontist to have the braces removed immediately. Ingesting rust can give you blood poisoning, which is dangerous.
