Getting Braces for a Second Time

Most orthodontic patients are teens and tweens getting braces for the first time. After the treatment is over, it’s common for their teeth to become misaligned again. Sometimes it is because they are still developing, but more often it is because they choose not to wear their night-time retainers as instructed. In a few years, their teeth have shifted back to where they were before treatment. This scenario is why many adults choose to have braces for a second time.

Prepare

Research the orthodontists in your area and find a few who specialize in adult braces. Orthodontic technology has advanced a lot in the last few years, so you will have more treatment options. In addition to traditional metal braces, there are now clear plastic aligners and porcelain braces. Each of these options is less noticeable than traditional metal braces.

During Treatment

Fortunately, your second round of braces will likely be shorter than the first treatment. Adult treatment takes about 6 months to 1 year on average to complete. For adults who drink alcohol, consider decreasing or completely eliminating your consumption of alcohol during your treatment. Alcohol dries out your mouth, especially when you have braces, and it can become very uncomfortable. When you do drink alcohol, you should also drink a lot of water to prevent your braces from drying out.

After Treatment

When you get your braces off for the second time, you won’t be able to stop smiling. To keep that great smile, make sure you always wear your retainer as instructed, otherwise, your teeth will shift again.
