How Long Does a Root Canal Procedure Take?
Root canals restore teeth that have severe damage or infection to their inner pulp. The procedure typically takes between 30 and 90 minutes, but the time spent repairing the tooth is well worth it to preserve the natural tooth and relieve discomfort.
Factors That Affect Procedure Time
The time it takes to perform a root canal depends on several factors, including:
Severity of the infection. Teeth with more extensive damage or infection may require more thorough cleaning and, in some cases, more than one visit.
Type of tooth. Teeth with multiple roots, such as molars, take longer to fix than teeth with one root.
Positioning and anatomy. Some teeth have curved or narrow canals or are positioned in areas that are harder to access. These factors can increase the complexity and treatment time.
Root Canal Procedure Timeline
Here’s what to expect during each phase of a root canal:
Numbing (10-15 minutes): The dentist applies numbing gel, then injects a local anesthetic to make the process more comfortable.
Pulp removal and cleaning (20-40 minutes): A small opening is made in the tooth to access the infected pulp. The damaged tissue is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected.
Sealing (10-20 mins): After cleaning, the canals are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to seal them and prevent further infection. A temporary filling is typically placed to protect the tooth until a follow-up visit.
At a later appointment, the dentist will place a permanent filling or crown to fully restore the tooth.
After the Procedure
It’s normal to experience mild soreness, tenderness, or numbness after a root canal. These symptoms typically improve within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Sticking to soft foods and avoiding chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully restored can also help. Most patients feel back to normal within 6–10 days.
