When is Dry Socket No Longer a Risk?

Dry socket affects 5% of patients after standard tooth extractions and 35% of patients after wisdom tooth extractions. Thankfully, though this condition can be painful and annoying, dry socket is only a problem until the mouth has healed effectively.

What is Dry Socket?

Dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot that forms after a tooth extraction becomes dislodged. Without the protection of the clot, the bone and nerve tissue are exposed, leading to extreme pain.

How Long is Dry Socket a Concern?

Dry socket is typically only an issue for around 7 to 10 days, or as long as it takes the extraction site to heal. When the wound has healed and the clot is no longer what protects the bone and nerve tissue, dry socket is no longer a risk. Swelling, bleeding, and pain typically decrease steadily during the first week after the extraction, but recovery speed ultimately depends on the individual’s age and mouth conditions.

What Puts You at Risk for Dry Socket?

Some factors are uncontrollable, while others may be influenced by lifestyle choices. These include factors such as:

  • A history of dry socket

  • A traumatic extraction

  • Jawbone issues

  • Oral infections

  • Oral contraceptives

  • Smoking

  • Poor dental hygiene

  • Certain medications or supplements

How Can You Decrease Your Risk?

Following your dentist’s instructions after an extraction will help protect against dry socket. While dry socket is sometimes unavoidable, here are some things you can do to lower your chances of dry socket developing:

  • Use painkillers and ice to manage pain and inflammation.

  • Limit activity.

  • Avoid straws.

  • Stick to a soft food diet.

  • Use a salt solution to rinse your mouth multiple times a day.
